Representation

What is representation?
Representation is the way that a particular group of people are portrayed in media due to the way they look or act. E.g. blondes are usually thought to be bimbos, and people who wear glasses are thought to be nerds. In teen dramas movies all characters are represented as stereotypical. In 'Not another teen movie' there is the stereotype of nerds, jocks, cheerleaders, the pretty ugly girl, the fat stupid guy etc.

In High School Musical, Zac Efron is the popular jock. It is easy to identify this through the way he's dressed and because he plays basketball. He is looked up to by the school and is wanted by the 'perfect' girl who in this case is Ashley Tisdale. She is seen as perfect through the way she dresses and is also the typical bimbo in this movie as she is also blonde. In the movie the princess diaries Amelia is portrayed as being the pretty, ugly girl through the way she dresses and acts, and the way she looks. At first she is dressed as scruffy and has a bad haircut with ugly glasses. She then has a makeover and changes into the complete opposite so that she is now seen as pretty. The way people act towards her also changes as well as the way she conducts herself.

I dislike the stereotype of the fat guy always being represented as stupid or dopey in movies such as 21 jump street because it gives off the idea that all fat people are stupid which isn't true as weight has nothing to do with how clever or stupid someone is.
I dislike the stereotypical cinderella stories as they are all alike and have the storyline of the main character being locked up and finding true love over a lost shoe.
